Candidate Evaluation

Islet transplants are still an experimental procedure, and therefore available only to people who meet certain requirements for enrollment in our clinical trial. In addition to meeting criteria, the patient must also undergo a medical and psycho-social evaluation.

An islet cell transplant may be considered for those patients who have had Type 1 diabetes for more than five years and meet the following criteria:

• Between the ages of 18 and 65
• Have had at least two hypoglycemic episodes in the past 12 months

The trial’s selection committee, which is made up of researchers and physicians, will ultimately decide who is eligible for inclusion in the trial.
