Working With Your Doctor

Make Each Doctor's Visit Count!

Before Your Visit

  • If this is a new doctor, be sure to have all of your records transferred before your appointment.
  • Prepare a list of your primary problems and concerns. This will help you remember details and help you focus your conversation with your health care provider.

On the Day of Your Visit

  • Arrive 15-30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for parking and check in.
  • Put all of your medicine in a bag and take it with you to the appointment.
  • Be sure to bring your picture ID, VCC card and any other important paperwork with you.
  • If you need help, be sure to ask a friend or family member to go with you to the appointment.
  • Wear casual clothing during your visit. A light sweater may help you feel more comfortable in some areas of the clinic. Wear comfortable shoes as well.
  • Leave all jewelry at home. You may be asked to remove jewelry for certain procedures.

At the Doctor's Office

  • Feel free to ask questions.
  • Take notes.
  • Before you leave, make sure you have a clear understanding of what your health care provider discussed during your visit.
  • Be sure to ask your doctor when you should schedule your next appointment.

After the Visit

  • Do what your doctor asked you to do- remember it’s up to you.
  • Download printable Brochure about how to Work With Your Primary Care Physician.

At the end of each visit, you will receive a summary of your care. This summary will include the reason for your visit, any medical problems and/or allergies, follow-up instructions, upcoming appointments and a list of your current medications.

Your Health Care Team

VCU Medical Center physicians are among the best in the nation. They are responsible for your examination, diagnosis and treatment. Your physician will discuss with you which procedures and tests may be necessary.

During your visit with the physician, you may have contact with other members of the health care team. Team members may include nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, technologists, social workers and other specialists. Since VCU Medical Center is an academic training hospital, you may be seen by residents who are physicians receiving extra training and expertise.

No two patient visits are alike. The length of your visit will depend on the amount of time your health care provider requires to ask questions or examine you. We want to be sure to address all your medical needs. Additional time may be required if your physician wants to schedule a diagnostic procedure or laboratory test.
