College Student Volunteer Program

Traditionally, we welcome students from various colleges and universities at the beginning of each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Undergraduate, graduate, or non-traditional students can become involved in many ways at VCU Health. To successfully apply to volunteer, you must meet the requirements explained below, so you will need to review them before the semester begins. We expect a weekly commitment of at least two consecutive hours (excluding official university breaks and holidays) for the entire semester. We encourage volunteers to participate for multiple semesters. Letters of reference will only be provided to volunteers who have served 40 hours or more (a record of hours can be provided at any time).

Summer 2026

If you are interested in applying to volunteer during Fall 2026, check this page in early July for materials and deadlines. Application materials and instructions will be posted when they are ready. Please do not call or email the office to ask exactly which day they will be posted.

Before continuing, ensure you understand:

  • Most volunteer opportunities are in downtown Richmond during weekday, daytime hours
  • A list of possible assignments is being updated as opportunities are confirmed and can change at any time
  • You must have a high school diploma or GED by 6/30/2026, and be enrolled in a college program (or planning to enroll in classes within the next twelve months)
  • Health screening, registration, criminal history checks and orientation are all required to participate
  • You must have a Social Security Number in order to volunteer
  • You must have a valid, government-issued ID, such as Driver’s License, Passport, or Military ID
  • Mandatory group training sessions will be held May 26-29
  • Summer volunteering will take place through August 16
