Deep brain tissue stimulation to better manage symptoms

In addition to providing the latest in pharmacological treatments to improve symptoms in Parkinson’s disease, our experts offer new technologies and opportunities for patients including adaptive deep brain stimulation and focused ultrasound. These surgical interventions are used to treat movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease, when medications and various rehabilitation strategies become less effective in managing symptoms.

Investigation of new diagnostic tool for Parkinson's disease

Our specialists are also researching cutting-edge approaches to advance care for Parkinson's disease through a variety of clinical trials. This includes being an enrollment site for:

  • A Phase 3 study of an investigational new stem cell therapy called bemdaneprocel to try and restore the loss of brain cells that occurs in Parkinson’s disease
  • A Phase 3 study of an investigational anti-alpha-synuclein antibody called prasinezumab to slow disease progression in early Parkinson’s disease

VCU Medical Center is the only comprehensive Level I adult, pediatric and burn trauma center in the region, providing a very high level of expertise for comprehensive neurological conditions affecting adults and children. This means that primary or acute care providers send or refer patients to VCU Medical Center for a more advanced level of care. As a leader in trauma care, our specialists provide total care for every aspect of injury.
