Sports medicine
Whether you play sports on a high school or college team, participate in an adult community league or enjoy the occasional game with friends, it is important to be aware of possible injuries that may occur during the game. Should an injury occur, we are ready and able to help you recover to your optimal level of health. As a former athlete himself, Dr. Wind understands the importance of staying active and is dedicated to helping patients get back in the game.
Diagnosis and treatment
We specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of athletic-related injuries, with services including:
- Knee arthroscopy
- Shoulder arthroscopy
- Technique analysis
- Training recommendations
We stress the importance of immediate care, as it is critical to a full recovery. Dr. Wind and his team have the expertise to prevent and treat a wide spectrum of sports injuries with treatment programs, which are tailored to the patient’s sport-specific interests and goals. When creating a treatment plan, we take into consideration all of the following:
- Your age
- Overall health
- Medical history
- Extent of your injury
- Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures or therapies
- Your opinions or preferences
Whenever possible, we seek to treat patients with the least invasive methods available. However, some injuries require surgery to ensure the best outcome.
Arthroscopy allows Dr. Wind to make a small incision and look inside the joint. A pencil-sized device is inserted into the joint, and the image is projected on a video monitor in the operating room, showing Dr. Wind where exactly to go to correct a problem with the joint.
Knee arthroscopy
This minimally invasive surgery is used to correct many conditions of the knee including:
- Debridement of torn cartilage
- Reconstructing a torn anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL
- Repair of large fragments of torn cartilage
- Microfracture or cartilage transfer for articular lesions
The benefits of knee arthroscopy include:
- Less invasive surgery
- Outpatient procedure
- Smaller incision
- Less scarring
- Faster recovery
- Faster return to daily activities
The knee is the largest joint in your body and one of the most easily injured joints. Knee pain can make it difficult for you to maintain an active lifestyle. Whether you are a nonathlete, a casual athlete or a seasoned athlete, our team is dedicated to providing you with the treatment needed to restore your quality of life and get you back to enjoying your activities.
Shoulder arthroscopy
Shoulder arthroscopy is a procedure used to inspect, diagnose and repair problems inside the shoulder. Shoulder arthroscopy is used to treat conditions of the shoulder including:
- Decompressions
- Rotator cuff repair
- Labral repair and treatment of instability
- Distal clavicle/AC joint pain
The benefits of shoulder arthroscopy include:
- Less invasive surgery
- Outpatient procedure
- Smaller incision
- Less scarring
- Faster recovery
- Faster return to daily activities
Technique analysis and training recommendations
We understands the special demands that sports place on the body. As an athlete, Dr. Wind can relate to a patient’s desire to perform at full potential. Providing technique analysis and training recommendations is just part of the comprehensive orthopedic care provided at Northern Neck Bone & Joint Center.
Our goal is to provide athletes with the necessary knowledge to avoid and prevent injuries during play. We provide a personal and tailored plan designed to meet the specific needs and goals of each patient. We offer a technique analysis to help identify possible technique errors that may be contributing to pain or unsatisfactory performance. We also provide guidance and advice to help improve techniques so that every athlete can perform at optimal levels.
Our approach to sports medicine is to provide the means for you to maintain athleticism, heal your body from injury, and keep it as pain free as possible. This is achieved through a combination advanced technologies and therapies, and a customized approach to treating every patient as an individual with unique needs and goals.
