Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery

Overview

Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has been a key division of our Department for nearly two decades. All of the faculty members in our Department are involved in facial reconstruction in some way. Reconstruction of the face is performed to help patients restore their appearance and/or function to a more normal state. Reconstruction is commonly performed for patients with the following problems:

  • Skin Cancer - When the cancer is removed a defect is left behind which often requires repair.
  • Our department works closely with VCU Health Dermatology to provide patients with state of the art diagnosis and removal of skin cancers. Reconstruction is then performed.
  • Head and Neck Cancer - When removal of cancers of the head and neck results in functional and/or cosmetic deficits reconstruction of these areas is performed, often using flaps of skin and soft tissue as well as grafts of skin from other areas of the body.
  • Facial Trauma - Our department manages trauma to the bones and soft tissues of the head and neck. Commonly repaired bony fractures are those of the nose, jaw, and cheekbones. We sometimes work in conjunction with other departments to give the patients our best possible treatment through a team approach. Cuts to the face and neck are also repaired using plastic technique to give our best possible result.
  • Cosmetic Surgery: Facial cosmetic surgery is the enhancement of a feature which is normal but which the patient wishes to look better. Our surgeons have extensive experience, skill, and expertise in the artistry of facial aesthetic surgery. This includes reconstruction, revision, and rejuvenation.
