General Internal Medicine

The mission of the Division of General Internal Medicine is to improve the health of all patients by:

  • providing outstanding clinical care,
  • educating the next generation of physicians, and
  • engaging in research and scholarship that promote both the science of discovery and the translation of existing knowledge to the care of patients.

The Division is committed to excellence in all of these endeavors.

The Division of General Internal Medicine is the largest Division in the Department of Internal Medicine and plays an integral role in our award winning medical center. The Division is comprised of over 50 highly talented faculty members engaged in all aspects of academic medicine. These faculty members practice in a variety of clinical settings, educate students and residents of all levels, and engage in important research that covers a wide array of clinical interests.

The Division works closely with other Divisions and Departments at VCU Medical Center to ensure the delivery of optimal patient care. Division faculty members also fill a number of key administrative roles within the Department of Internal Medicine and the VCU Health System. These roles include the Chief Medical Officer for the VCU Health System, the Chief Medical Information Officer for the Health System, an Assistant Vice President for the University, and the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director.
