Hip arthroscopy

This surgery is only offered by a handful of surgeons in Virginia, and Dr. Wind is proud to be able to offer this option to the Tappahannock community. It is a relatively new surgical technique that effectively treats a variety of hip conditions, including:

  • Hip impingement: conditions in which the top of the femur is not round, or the front edge of the socket is too prominent causing smooth motion of the hip socket to be disrupted.
  • Labral tear: condition where the tissue in the hip socket becomes pinched in the joint and causes pain/catching sensations.
  • Loose bodies: pieces of cartilage that form within the joint and get caught in the hip during movement.
  • Snapping hip syndrome: snapping sensation, and often an audible popping noise, when the hip is flexed and extended.
  • Cartilage damage: an injury which causes a piece of cartilage to break away from the hip bone.

Benefits of hip arthroscopy:

  • Much less invasive procedure than traditional hip surgery
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Faster recovery time
  • May help to delay or avoid hip replacement

Arthroscopy comes from the Latin words arthos (joint) and scope (to look inside). Arthroscopy allows Dr. Wind to make a small incision and look inside the joint. A pencil-sized device is inserted into the joint and the image is projected on a video monitor in the operating room, showing Dr. Wind where exactly to go to correct a problem within the joint.

Hip arthroscopy is a great option for patients who are unable to relieve symptoms with other non-surgical methods. Advances have been made to make this a safe and effective alternative to open hip surgery. Dr. Wind is trained and experienced to perform this procedure skillfully and with the best results.
