Obstetric Anesthesia

For many pregnant people, deciding whether to use anesthetic pain medication during childbirth is deeply personal — and we’re here to help support your choice. Whether your birth plan specifies your pain management preferences, or you want to make decisions once you go into labor, we are partners in your care.

What is OB Anesthesia?

Within the field of anesthesiology, there are doctors who specialize in pain relief during pregnancy. These specialists, called OB anesthesiologists, are trained to consult and provide pain relief before, during and after delivery.

Our OB anesthesiologists work closely with all members of your birthing team, including your OB-GYN, certified nurse-midwife and and nurses. We provide around-the-clock care, so we can answer your questions and help you manage your pain no matter what time you go into labor.

OB Anesthesia Services We Offer

Our experienced team, led by OB anesthesiologist Fatoumata Kromah, MD, is prepared to care for everyone who delivers with us.

Whether your pregnancy is considered routine or high-risk, you have access to pain relief options that are safe for you and your baby. We support natural pain management techniques, such as birthing balls, massage and labor tubs. And we offer the full range of anesthesia options, including epidurals, nitrous oxide and spinal blocks.

An International Center of Excellence

Our commitment to providing safe, patient-centered OB anesthesia services is recognized by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP). We are the only SOAP-designed Center of Excellence in Virginia and one of only 70 worldwide. This honor confirms that we stay up to date on best practices in the field of OB anesthesiology. It also validates our team’s skills and knowledge, which are crucial to making sure that you get the safest care and have the best possible outcome and experience.

"We are thrilled to receive this designation. I am proud of our team as we work to continually provide the highest standard of care to our patients," said Dr. Fatoumata Kromah, Director of Obstetrics Anesthesia.
