Mother-Infant Unit: Beginning Your Lives as a Family

VCU Medical Center - Main Hospital
1250 E. Marshall Street
8th Floor
Richmond, Virginia 23219

Detailed direction for our downtown location at VCU Medical Center.

After birth, your baby will stay with you in the Mother-Infant Unit. We encourage “rooming-in,” where mother and baby stay in the same room together. We have learned that babies do much better and mothers gain confidence in caring for their babies when they remain together throughout the hospital stay.

All of our nurses are specially trained to assist you with breastfeeding. Our nurses will encourage you to keep your baby at bedside, enjoy skin-to-skin time, and feed by watching for your baby's cues. Certified lactation consultants are available for additional support.

Our nurses will provide education and support so that you are confident to care for your new baby at home.

You’ll learn about:

  • Feeding
  • Bathing
  • Calming
  • Changing diapers
  • Umbilical cord care
  • Safe sleep
  • Car seat safety
  • When to call a doctor
