Information for Referring Physicians

We rely on a team of expert radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians as well as state-of-the-art technology to maintain our standard of excellent care. We offer our patients a number of traditional exams and cutting-edge procedures not only to diagnose, but also to provide therapeutic interventions. From breast imaging and vascular intervention to venous ablation and virtual colonography, our patients receive the highest level of treatment from a team of advanced radiologists.

Patients may choose to receive care at several convenient VCU Medical Center locations, including MCV Hospitals and Stony Point. A picture archiving and communication system (PACS) distributes images and reports through the VCU network and allows our referring physicians to have simultaneous access to results at any of our locations, as well as clinics, inpatient units and surgical suites.

To optimize radiological examinations, the Department of Radiology has provided a series of instructions for each of our primary procedures. As a referring physician, we encourage you to review these instructions with your patients prior to appointments to ensure that they understand the requirements.

Sending Previous Studies

If you have medical imaging studies to send to the Department of Radiology at VCU Health, you can do so in one of the following methods:

  • Referring physicians can send a CD or submit files via our cloud-based image sharing.
  • If you do not currently use LifeImage but are interested in sending medical images to VCU Health electronically, please contact our Image Resource Center at VCU Health by calling (804) 828-3543.

Summary of the LifeImage Cloud-based Image Sharing Program

  • Images are transferred into Local LifeImage via cloud or CD. VCU Health’s image sharing network consists of the LifeImage cloud infrastructure along with the PowerShare and Nucleus/RadConnect networks.
  • Once images are in the Local LifeImage system, any medical team member may nominate the images to PACS for long-term storage or radiologist consult. Images will only be held locally for 30 days. If not nominated within the 30 day window, images will be auto-purged from the system.
  • Radiology and Cardiology PACS accept images from the Local LifeImage. Providers may process images to either PACS by selecting the nomination form for the PACS you would like to send images to.
  • Once images are nominated, the Image Resource Center (IRC) team will place studies in the Radiology archive for viewing in IntelliSpace. If an issue arises with the nominations form, the IRC team will email and page the provider for follow-up Cardiology processes images into cardiology PACS system; the IRC does not process cardiology studies.
  • Consult requests will have order proposals placed in Cerner and will not be processed to the archive until the orders are signed by the provider. Refer to Radiology Policy G-709 for more information on consult requests.
  • Radiology IRC team will process any trauma transfer patient images automatically when alerted by the transfer center. This is done per policy and providers’ co-signature is not needed for these requests.
  • Image Resource Center is here as a supportive service to our providers.
