Neuropsychology for Parkinson's and related diseases

Neuropsychologists are psychologists with specialized training in understanding brain functions, including changes in thinking, mood, and behavior that can occur in neurological conditions or medical illness. Dr. Sarah K. Lageman, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, and Dr. Bruce Parkinson, Ph.D., are two neuropsychologists in our center who work with our physicians and other health care providers to maximize medical outcomes and promote positive health and wellbeing for individuals with movement disorders.

A neuropsychological assessment examines attention, speed of thinking, visual and language skills, learning and memory, problem solving, reasoning and other brain functions. Important aspects include:

  • Determination of current cognitive strengths and weaknesses
  • Information regarding possible causes of thinking, mood, or behavior problems
  • Recommendations for optimizing overall health, independence, and quality of life

Psychology for Parkinson's and related diseases

Dr. Sarah K. Lageman, Ph.D., works with patients and family members for therapy focused on addressing mood and thinking changes that can occur in Parkinson's disease and related disorders. Depression and anxiety can develop or worsen if someone has already experienced these issues before their diagnosis of Parkinson’s. Dr. Lageman shares education about how individuals can use relaxation strategies to calm themselves down and engage in various activities that help bolster their mood. She also works with family members to adjust to chronic illness, role changes, and transitions in living arrangements that can occur. Dr. Lageman also provides coping strategies for caregivers managing dementia behavior and helps guide interested individuals in discussing their wishes and choices regarding end-of-life care.
