Clinical trials in dermatology

We are an academic medical center. We balance patient care, education and clinical research to continually improve the care we provide. Through clinical trials, we test new medications, therapies and devices to see how well they work for different skin conditions.

If you qualify for a clinical trial, our team will guide you every step of the way. We’ll answer your initial questions and support you throughout the study.

Why clinical trials matter

Clinical trials help doctors learn which treatments work best and who can benefit the most. Many treatments considered standard today, like biologic therapies, were first tested in research settings like ours.

You may qualify for a clinical trial if:

  • Your current treatment isn’t working well
  • Your skin condition is rare, complex or hard to treat

Even if you qualify, joining a clinical trial is always a personal decision. Your doctor will explain the risks, benefits and steps involved so you can make a decision that feels right for you.

How to enroll

If you’re interested in a clinical trial, you can:

  • Ask your doctor about available clinical trials during your next visit
  • Call our clinic to connect with the research team

FAQ

Do I have to pay to enroll in a clinical trial?

In many cases, the trial sponsor covers study-related medicines and visits. But you may still have regular health care costs, like lab tests or clinic fees. We’ll explain everything regarding your specific clinical trial before you join.

Can I leave a clinical trial if I change my mind?

Yes. You can stop at any time for any reason. If you leave a clinical trial, your care team will help you plan for treatment outside the study. Even if you choose to leave the study, you will still continue to receive excellent care at VCU Health.

Will I see my regular dermatologist during the trial?

Yes. Your study team will work with your dermatologist to make sure you have safe, coordinated care.
