Our services

Our Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Center offers a seamless experience for patients and their families. With specialized evaluation and treatment, our team ensures you get the level of care you deserve for the full range of movement disorders.

Services

Working together with you and your family, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan that includes diagnostic services, advanced treatment options and support programs to meet your unique needs and goals.

Team-based evaluation and care

Our collaborative process gives you access to specialty and sub-specialty care in one place. By combining clinical evaluation and treatment; research; and education and outreach, we provide a coordinated approach for combatting movement disorders and neurodegenerative disorders.

Evaluation includes assessments by a team of providers — which in addition to a neurologist could include a mid-level practitioner, neuropsychologist, neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist and/or speech-language therapist — who work together to create a complete treatment plan to address every aspect of your movement disorder and overall health.

Genetic counseling

Genetic testing allows us to analyze your DNA with a simple blood or saliva sample. With the information we gather, we can identify specific genetic mutations or variations that contribute to conditions like Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

While not all cases have a genetic basis, identifying genetic factors can help in understanding disease risk, prognosis and potential treatment options.

During genetic counseling, you and your family work with a genetic specialist who can:

  • Analyze inheritance in your family
  • Explore testing options
  • Provide information about inherited movement disorders
  • Share your family members’ chances of inheriting a condition

Neuropsychology and psychology care

Mood and thinking changes are common in patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. Depression and anxiety can develop as part of your medical condition, or also as a response to it. That’s why our trained neuropsychologists are skilled in caring for patients with movement disorders to ensure they feel well mentally, emotionally and physically.

While you or your loved one is in our care, we’ll work with you to assess skills like:

  • Attentiveness
  • Learning and memory
  • Problem-solving
  • Reading visual and language cues
  • Reasoning
  • Speed of thinking

And because we believe that caring for our patients means supporting their families too, we provide coping strategies for caregivers with newly diagnosed loved ones, especially those managing dementia behavior.

We also help guide interested individuals in discussing their wishes and choices regarding end-of-life care. Learn more about our neuropsychology and psychology services here.

Speech therapy

If you’re referred to us for a movement disorder, you may also be struggling with voice, speech, language, cognition or swallowing. When issues like these affect your quality of life and keeping you from activities you love, our experienced speech language pathologists are ready with all the support you need.

Starting with a complete evaluation, we’ll work to understand your current challenges. Then, we’ll create a care plan to help you communicate and thrive again.

A referral is required from a physician, and we strongly suggest getting a formal diagnosis from a neurologist before beginning speech therapy. Coming with your recent medical records is also appreciated. Learn more about what to expect here.
