Jeniece Roane, Ph.D., RN, NE-BC, has been named the permanent chief operating officer (COO) for VCU Medical Center. After serving on an interim basis since September, she became the permanent COO in early January.

The COO for the academic medical center plays an active role in service line development and planning, operations and support services. Roane will collaborate closely with all support, professional and clinical team members and clinicians from across the system.

Roane has been a registered nurse for 32 years with expertise in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. She has held formal leadership roles in nursing and hospital administration since 2002, most recently serving as the vice president of operations for Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) before taking on the interim COO role.

From 2020 through 2022, Roane served as the interim chief nursing officer for VCU Medical Center. In that role, she partnered with her colleagues to lead the organization and nursing services through its fourth successful Magnet® hospital designation, while also guiding the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roane’s recent accomplishments include leading CHoR teams to achieve Level 1 verification for the children’s trauma and surgery programs, Baby Friendly designation and re-verification, and a spot in the top children’s hospitals list by U.S. News & World Report. She was a pivotal leader in the activation of the Children’s Tower and has spearheaded the expansion of many programs, including the pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab and the implementation of the Virginia’s first in-hospital Ronald McDonald House Charities house

Roane’s leadership has been recognized locally and regionally. She is the 2024 recipient of the Paul A. and Veronica H. Gross Achievement Award, recognizing the substantial contributions she has made to nursing. In 2021, Roane was recognized as the YWCA’s Outstanding Woman in Health and Science for the Richmond Region.
