VCU Medical Center hires new chief nursing officer
Mary Marshman will begin in her new role at the academic medical center in late July.

After an extensive search, Mary Marshman, DNP, RN, has been named the new chief nursing officer (CNO) for VCU Medical Center. She will begin her new role at the medical center on July 20.
The CNO works in partnership with the CNOs of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital and VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital to ensure that excellence in clinical care, education, research and community outreach is promoted across the health system.
“In this position, Mary will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all aspects related to direct patient care and nursing activities at the medical center,” said Jim Willis, interim president of VCU Medical Center. “Mary is an experienced nurse executive who has a passion for creating innovative nurse practice environments. We look forward to having her get started in July.”
Marshman comes to VCU Health from the University of Louisville Health (UofL Health) Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where she serves as the vice president of patient care services and the chief nurse executive. In this role, Marshman led the creation of a workplace safety council and established a comprehensive safe patient handling program. She has also held nursing leadership roles at WellStar Health System and Grady Health System, both in Atlanta, and Centra Health in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Marshman is a member of a variety of professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Leaders and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Johns Hopkins University, an advanced diploma in nursing from Lynchburg General Hospital Marshall-Lodge School of Nursing and Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in nursing from the University of Virginia.
