Spine surgery techniques and tools
We are experts in many advanced surgery techniques. We can also suggest nonsurgical options, like physical therapy, spinal injections, nerve stimulation and radiofrequency ablation.
Minimally invasive spine surgery
Many of our surgeries, like kyphoplasty and microdiscectomy, use minimally invasive techniques that can help you heal faster with less pain and fewer scars. You may be able to leave the hospital the same day as your surgery. Your provider can see if minimally invasive surgery is right for you.
Robotic spine surgery
Technology like robotic navigation, AI planning software and 3D-printed implants help our surgeons be more precise and make operations safer for you. We also use advanced intraoperative imaging tools like intraoperative CT, fluoroscopy, and digital biplane angiography (3DBRA) to give you an accurate diagnosis before surgery.
Complex deformity surgery
We are experts in treating adults with complex spinal deformities, such as scoliosis, kyphosis and flatback deformities. Our surgery options include deformity correction and complex revision procedures.
Complex revision
Patients across the region choose us for complex revisions because of our comprehensive approach and skilled team of surgeons, nurses and physical therapists.
Patient-specific implants
Your treatment should be a perfect fit. We can plan and build customized implants and rods before your surgery that are just right for your spine.
Cervical disc replacement
During a cervical disc replacement, our surgeons take out a damaged or herniated disc and replace it with an artificial one. This procedure improves your range of motion and lowers your chance of having problems after surgery.
Spinal fusion
Spinal fusion can correct deformities and help with back pain by using implants to join two vertebrae together. Our surgeons can also perform other procedures, like foraminotomy, laminectomy and laminotomy, alongside spinal fusion.
Awards and recognitions

U.S. News and World Report awarded VCU Medical Center a High Performing ranking for back surgery (spinal fusion), the highest possible ranking in that category.
