Our services
Discover the wide range of hearing options available to you in Audiology. As part of the VCU Health network, we work with other teams, including Otolaryngology (or ENT) and speech therapy. You get the complete hearing care you need at a location that’s convenient to you.
Treatment for all types of hearing loss
Our audiology services focus on treating any of the three types of hearing loss:
- Sensorineural hearing loss: A more permanent type of hearing loss that results from damage to the inner ear. Treatment may involve hearing aids or another device.
- Conductive hearing loss: Hearing loss that happens when sound can’t get through the outer ear or middle ear. Treatment may involve medical intervention, hearing aids or bone conducting devices.
- Mixed hearing loss: A combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.
Complete audiology services
We offer full hearing evaluations that check how you respond to sound. These tests can be behavioral or electrical physiological hearing tests. You can also receive balance testing. This type of test checks for inner ear issues if you have vertigo or dizziness.
After a hearing test, your audiologist goes over any results and what they recommend. We may suggest a hearing device or cochlear implant. We may even refer you to another provider for additional treatment.
Hearing aids and devices
We provide and support different device options to improve access to sound for people with hearing loss. Our audiologists are licensed to select, fit and dispense hearing aids. We’re also uniquely trained to program cochlear implants. We can even help you work though any equipment concerns.
Examples of our hearing devices include:
- Bone-anchored hearing implants
- Cochlear implants
- Hearing protection
- Musician’s ear plugs
- Swim plugs
- Traditional hearing aids

Pediatric audiology
Through the Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at VCU Health, we offer tests to determine a child’s hearing status. Referrals come from the newborn hearing screening program, local health professionals and educators. Parents may also self-refer.
For a child with hearing loss, we help find the best interventions to improve their access to sound. We work in partnership with families, educators, and other health care and agency providers. Together, we encourage the best possible communication development for children with hearing loss.
