Since being named the chief information officer of VCU Health in 2022, Ellen Wiegand has helped improve operations and the financial performance of the health system. She’s also fostered a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement in the IT department she leads.
These exceptional efforts are leading to national and global recognition. Wiegand was recently included on the Constellation Research 2026 ‘Business Transformation 150’ list as well as Becker’s Hospital Review’s ‘100 women in health IT to know’ for 2025.
“Ellen’s recognition from Constellation Research and Becker’s Hospital Review is richly deserved and a real testament to her leadership and the efforts of her team,” said Marlon Levy, M.D., MBA, senior vice president for VCU Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health System. “She leads the VCU Health IT strategy with a mission-driven approach that delivers a great experience for both our patients and caregivers.”
Constellation Research’s 2026 Business Transformation 150 list recognizes leaders across the globe who balance organizational priorities while staying true to the values they exemplify and navigating the rise of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI. Wiegand’s inclusion on this list is due to her ability to harness these technologies to drive innovation and accelerate progress while showcasing a deep understanding of how digital and exponential technologies are reshaping the health care landscape.
Recognizing that women are leading the charge in transforming the future of health care through innovation in health IT, Becker’s Hospital Review annually honors 100 women who are driving meaningful change across the industry.
“There are special things taking place at VCU Health, within the IT team and across the entire health system. This recognition is undeniable proof of that, and I am extremely proud of my colleagues and the work we are doing to preserve and restore health for all people of Virginia and beyond,” Wiegand said.
Since joining VCU Health in 2022, Wiegand has aligned emerging technology with frontline needs. She established VCU Health’s Technology & Data Council and an AI workgroup to promote the use of technology to improve quality, safety, patient experience and workforce wellness. Wiegand’s work earned her the 2024 “CapitalCIO of the Year” award in the enterprise category. She also helped VCU Health secure national rankings for both financial strength and clinical excellence.
