VCU Health to build emergency center in New Kent County

The VCU Health System Board of Directors today approved the development of an emergency center in New Kent County.

Construction is set to begin next month on the 17,000-square-foot New Kent Emergency Center at 2495 Pocahontas Trail in Quinton.

“Part of our redesign of the health care delivery model is looking for the right partners to create access to care where people need it most,” said Marsha D. Rappley, M.D., CEO of VCU Health System and senior vice president for health sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. “The New Kent Emergency Center gives us the opportunity to partner with the community in this way, extending access to leading emergency and trauma care close to home.”

The $16 million center will offer round-the-clock emergency medicine physicians, emergency-trained registered nurses, laboratory services and integrated technology. The center will offer advanced imaging including CT scans, digital X-rays and ultrasounds.

“We’re excited to provide the people of New Kent County with emergency care in the area where they live,” said Deborah Davis, chief of strategic initiatives. “New Kent County is a growing part of the Richmond metropolitan area but is currently underserved medically. The time is right to develop the county’s first emergency center.”

The center, located near Exit 205 of Interstate 64, will open in the spring of 2020. The site and facility plans allow for future medical office expansion.

“The VCU Health New Kent Emergency Center will greatly benefit health outcomes for New Kent County families,” said Del. Christopher K. Peace, R-97th, whose legislative district will house the center. “In addition to improving access to emergency services, the presence of VCU Health’s world-class emergency services will greatly enhance the economic opportunities for our community."

Editor's note: As of May 2019, the official name of the freestanding facility is VCU Health Emergency Center at New Kent.
