VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital's next president will be Josh Hammond, who has been serving as the hospital's interim leader since June. The appointment will be effective Dec. 7.
As president of VCU Health’s hospital serving Tappahannock and the Northern Neck region of Virginia, Hammond will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations and clinical services, while leading strategic initiatives aligned with the mission and vision of VCU Health.
Hammond will continue to work with VCU Health leadership and Tappahannock Hospital team members to develop and deliver clinical services, patient care and workforce training and development to sustain the key role the hospital plays in its surrounding communities.
"VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital is an integral part of the community,” Hammond said. “As we look forward, I am excited to strengthen our local partnerships, while enhancing each patient's experience with the latest innovations in care that come with being a part of a university-based health system."
Hammond brings 14 years of health care leadership experience to his new role, including a varied background working in academic medical centers, joint venture ambulatory surgery centers and community hospital environments.
Prior to becoming Tappahannock Hospital’s interim president, Hammond was the associate vice president for ambulatory operations for VCU Health where he was responsible for health system access improvement initiatives, leading the ambulatory capacity management team and new site development, among other duties. He also served as VCU Health’s interim vice president of ambulatory operations as well as senior director of ambulatory operations. Before joining VCU Health, Hammond held multiple leadership roles with Sentara Health in Virginia and North Carolina.
Hammond follows Liz Martin, who retired in June 2025. Martin spent more than three decades shaping health care in the region, starting out at Riverside Health System which was then acquired by VCU Health and renamed VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital in 2021.
