RICHMOND, Va. (March 3, 2022) —VCU Health went live with Epic, a modern electronic health record (EHR), at most of its Virginia locations in December 2021. On March 5, 2022, VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital and its VCU Health System provider practices in the Northern Neck will join VCU Health’s Epic network. This marks a significant final step in VCU Health’s acquisition of Tappahannock Hospital and allows for more seamless communication and flow of clinical information throughout the system.

In addition to adopting VCU Health’s Epic EHR and patient portal, MyChart, Tappahannock Hospital and affiliated clinics installed new technology and clinical equipment, and completed integrating VCU Health policies and procedures.

“We have themed our transition ‘Better Together’ because it reflects our ongoing commitment to improved care for the community,” said Liz Martin, president of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital. “This milestone fulfills the promise that we are bringing world-class care closer to home for residents of Tappahannock and the Northern Neck.”

Online patient portal transfer

Tappahannock patients of VCU Health’s clinics and hospital will transition from their Riverside MyChart patient portal to a new VCU Health MyChart patient portal account. The same vendor operates both patient portals, so patients do not need to learn a new system. As part of the transition, patient appointments, test results and other health information will securely carry over to the VCU Health MyChart experience.

Patients can access their new account by visiting https://mychart.vcuhealth.org or downloading the VCU Health MyChart app from their preferred app store.

Tappahannock patients can use their existing Riverside MyChart username and password to access their new VCU Health MyChart account. Patients who receive medical care at Riverside and VCU Health locations can choose to link their VCU Health and Riverside MyChart accounts for easy care navigation.

Better care coordination

The upcoming transition includes technology upgrades and additional clinical equipment throughout the hospital, including the emergency department, lab and imaging services. These changes bring important added capabilities, while maintaining much of the same service and functionality for patients and team members.

The fully integrated experience creates real-time access to complete patient information across the entire VCU Health enterprise. “Our patients are used to a convenient and simple way to navigate their health care,” said Martin. “Now that all VCU Health locations are on Epic and using the same clinical systems and processes, we can work more efficiently across our system. This benefits all our patients, whether they seek care locally in Tappahannock or connect with experts in specialized care anywhere throughout the VCU Health system.”

Patient appointments scheduled for March 5 and later with VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital and VCU Health System provider practices in the Northern Neck can be viewed and approved in VCU Health’s MyChart accounts.

More than 250 million patients worldwide have a current electronic record in Epic and over 150 million patients use MyChart, making it one of the most widely implemented EHR system in the health care industry.
