VCU Health leadership is steadfast in our commitment to the safety of team members and patients. No one should feel unsafe coming to work or getting their care. It is an unfortunate truth that violence is one of the nation’s major public health and safety issues, both in our communities and workplaces, and that is why we are asking you to join us in recognizing the Hospitals Against Violence (#HAVhope) national day of awareness taking place today, Friday, June 2.

Part of the American Hospital Association’s Hospitals Against Violence (HAV) initiative, #HAVhope highlights how America’s hospitals and health systems combat violence in their workplaces and communities through partnerships, innovations and creative thinking to foster peace and make the environment safer for workers and patients.

As this national campaign illustrates, we are not alone at VCU Health in the challenges we face. Reducing assaults and increasing safety for team members and patients is critical to our mission and vision. #HAVhope unites hospitals, health systems, nurses, doctors and other professionals from across the country to work toward solutions to these challenges, and we know we have that same sense of shared unity at VCU Health.

With this in mind, we remind team members, patients and community members to treat each other with respect and empathy. We are here to care for each other and cannot do our best work when facing threats, harassment and violence. Working in health care can be demanding and stressful, but being abused should not be part of the job. We strive to be a place of healing, not hate.

Thank you for your continued engagement and feedback about how we can make our environment safer. We are listening and taking action, and will continue to keep you updated on specific action plans. In the meantime, please join us in recognizing the #HAVhope national day of awareness and in working together to create safer workplaces and communities.

Sincerely,
