The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) has named Gonzalo Bearman, M.D., MPH, chair of infectious diseases at VCU Health, the inaugural editor-in-chief of its new journal, Antimicrobial Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology.

The society chose Dr. Bearman from a large field of highly qualified candidates because of his expertise and commitment to advancing the field of healthcare epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship through innovation and research.

“Our primary objective over the next year is to establish an editorial team to oversee the publication of high quality, original research, reviews and commentaries representing a diverse array of authorities and perspectives,” Bearman said. “Our goal is to develop the premier open-access journal in the fields of infection prevention, health care epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship to promote safe health care for all.”

Bearman will serve a five-year term as editor-in-chief beginning in March.
