If your roof starts leaking or your check engine light comes on, it’s nice to have someone you trust to fix it nearby. You’ve likely found these experts through good references and checked their credentials to make sure they are specialized.

Finding the right health care should be treated the same way.

For specialized care close to home, VCU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU may be your next call. Both of VCU Health’s hospitals in downtown Richmond, Virginia were ranked among the nation’s best by Newsweek and Statista for 2025.

America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care in 2025 recognizes the top hospitals across the country for cancer, cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, endocrine and pulmonary care.

VCU Medical Center was named for all categories, and it is the only Richmond area hospital to be included on the list.

“This recognition from Newsweek and Statista speaks to the innovative work and compassionate care of our team members across our health system," said Marlon Levy, M.D., MBA, senior vice president for VCU Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health. “As a university-based hospital, VCU Medical Center can employ the latest technology and best practices to help each and every patient needing specialized care live their best life.”

The list of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals of 2025 features the top pediatric hospitals in eight different fields: cardiology and cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics and pulmonology.

Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU was ranked number 45 for cardiology and cardiac surgery. It’s also the only Richmond-based hospital with pediatric services on the list.

“Our full-service heart center brings skill and compassion to every encounter. On a given day, they may be diagnosing a baby’s congenital heart defect before birth, mending a child’s heart through a minimally-invasive procedure in our dedicated pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab, or educating school personnel so they’re prepared to address sudden cardiac arrest on school grounds,” said Karen Hendricks-Muñoz, M.D., MPH, interim physician-in-chief of CHoR. “Their impact on the health of our children and communities is wide reaching and has earned them the deserved recognition as being among the best in the nation.”

Newsweek partnered with Statista, a global research firm, to rank the nation’s best hospitals for specialized and pediatric care. They compiled data from patient satisfaction surveys, accreditations and industry recommendations to develop the rankings.
