South Hill—Thanks to the hard work of its volunteers, the Ladies of the Lake Cancer Support Team made a generous donation of $6,000 this year to s upport the VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Care Fund.

“We are a group of 20 ladies and that’s pretty much what we do,” said team captain Sarah Baltz.

The Patient Cancer Care Fund, created in 2013, supports area patients undergoing cancer treatment. It is primarily used to help with emergency medications, nutritional supplements, personal care items, transportation to cancer treatments, and other identified needs for cancer patients seeking assistance.

Baltz said the Holiday Home Tour is their organization’s primary fundraiser, which this past December featured seven beautifully decorated homes around Lake Gaston. “We had a very successful home tour this year,” Baltz said, noting 700 tickets were sold. “We cannot do it without the people in the community.”

The annual tour marks the beginning of the holiday season for many ticket purchasers who venture out the first Saturday in December to view homes decorated by homeowners.

Among the Ladies of the Lake’s other fundraisers include a monthly BUNCO night held at 7p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Central Rescue Squad building in Gasburg, Va.

The organization is also planning to release their second cookbook for sale in June after garnering much success from their first cookbook a few years ago.

The organization’s 7th Annual Vendor Fair at the Lion’s Den in Henrico, N.C. is slated for June 8th, featuring crafts, homemade baked goods, and other items.
