Jeniece Roane, Ph.D., RN, NE-BC, has been appointed as the interim chief operating officer (COO) for VCU Medical Center. She started in the role in late September.

Roane has been a registered nurse for 32 years. Her clinical background is in pediatrics and pediatric critical care. She has held formal leadership roles in nursing and hospital administration since 2002, most recently serving as the vice president of operations for Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR).

From 2020 through 2022, Roane served as the interim chief nursing officer for VCU Medical Center. In that role, she partnered with her colleagues to lead the organization and nursing services through its fourth successful Magnet designation, while also guiding the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roane’s recent accomplishments include leading CHoR teams to achieve Level 1 verification for the children’s trauma and surgery programs, Baby Friendly designation and re-verification and a spot in the top children’s hospitals list by U.S. News & World Report. She was a pivotal leader in the opening of the Children’s Tower and has spearheaded efforts to expand programs since its opening in 2023, including the pediatric cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab and the implementation of the first Ronald McDonald House Charities house located in a Virginia hospital.

Roane’s leadership has been recognized locally and regionally. She is the 2024 recipient of the Paul A. and Veronica H. Gross Achievement Award, recognizing the substantial contributions she has made to nursing. In 2021, Roane was recognized as the YWCA’s Outstanding Woman in Health and Science for the Richmond Region and, in 2015, she was recognized by her VCU Health colleagues for her transformational leadership style. Roane also gives back to the community through community board service activities. She is currently a board member of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Richmond and Greater Richmond SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now).

As interim COO for the medical center, Roane will take an active role in service line development and planning, operational efficiencies and support services. Roane will collaborate closely with all support, professional and clinical team members and providers from across the system.
