Hospital to celebrate 100 years of caring for children

1923---Convalescent-Hospital-1576856910_750x504

In April 1920, the hospital known today as Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU was incorporated as Crippled Children’s Hospital. Established through the work and investments of passionate doctors, nurses, volunteers and philanthropists, the hospital was founded to care for all children in the community.

Construction of the hospital on Brook Road was completed in 1928, and over the years, the hospital has grown and changed to provide new and different services with additional locations to serve more children and families. In 2010, the hospital joined with VCU Health, and this year, construction began on a new inpatient hospital, which will open in 2022.

Although the needs of the community have changed over the last century, CHoR remains committed to its original mission of caring for every child. Thanks to generous community support, CHoR has been able to develop new clinical programs, recruit more specialists, support research and training, and help hundreds of thousands of children and families over the years.

As we look ahead to the next 100 years, we stand at another turning point for pediatric healthcare in our region. Children’s Hospital Foundation is beginning a $100 million capital campaign to support construction of our new inpatient hospital and will match the first $25 million in gifts from the community. Together, we will build a hospital to surround and support our world-class teams that will have a lasting impact for the next 100 years.

Make a donation and support CHoR’s next 100 years.
