Specialty Pharmacy

VCU Health Specialty Pharmacy provides services to Virginians who use specialty medications to treat rare or complex health problems. We’re committed to providing safe, high-quality care and outstanding customer service.

How We’re Different from a Regular Retail Pharmacy

Although we fill and refill medications like any pharmacy, we are primarily a mail-order pharmacy. We work directly with your healthcare provider and health insurance company — and, if needed, your family members or a caregiver — to make sure you receive your medications in a timely manner.

We also offer clinical services, including:

  • Providing prescription management services, such as medication counseling and prescription transfers
  • Reviewing your medical records to ensure that your medication is safe and appropriate based on your health
  • Calling you with monthly refill reminders
  • Helping you with any issues that may arise related to your medication or prescription drug coverage

Providing a Positive Pharmacy Experience

We know your medical needs may be complex,, and managing your medications can feel overwhelming at times. That’s why our team aims to provide:

  • Personalized patient care. Our specially trained staff members will work with you to discuss your treatment plan. We’ll also address all of your questions or concerns.
  • Collaboration with your providers. We work directly with your doctors and other caregivers to immediately address any treatment difficulties.
  • Regular follow-up. Getting your medications and medical supplies quickly is important. As one of your healthcare advocates, we’ll stay in close contact with you throughout your treatment.
  • Help obtaining insurance coverage. Because specialty medications can be costly, we’ll help you explore every option available to you to make it more affordable. If there are no options available that can reduce the financial burden, then we can reach out to your provider to discuss alternative medications that would work for you. We can also help you understand how your medical insurance and prescription coverage works.
  • On-time delivery. We offer fast and convenient delivery to your home, workplace or other preferred location at no additional cost.
