Elite athlete or ‘weekend warrior,’ she’s passionate about keeping you in the game                            

Are you a seasoned athlete? Or maybe you just enjoy an active lifestyle, or going on outdoor adventures. In either case, you’ve got a lot in common with Dr. Meghan Richardson.

“I am passionate about taking care of athletes of all skill levels and abilities,” says Richardson, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. “Regardless of whether you are a Division I athlete, weekend warrior, or a parent chasing kids, my goal is to get you back to the activities you love the most.”

While earning her medical degree at the VCU School of Medicine, Richardson “fell in love” with Richmond — and its people and athletes who would later become her patients. After her orthopaedic surgery residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook and sports medicine fellowship at the University of North Carolina, she returned to Virginia and underwent additional fellowship training in hip arthroscopy at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She joined VCU Health in 2024.

Her expertise spans injuries and procedures of the hip, shoulder and knee. With a focus on both surgical and non-surgical treatments, she guides patients from diagnosis through recovery to get them back to sport or enjoying life. Common conditions she treats include ACL and meniscus tears, hip impingement and labral tears, rotator cuff injuries and shoulder dislocations.

“At VCU, we have a great team of physicians, surgeons, athletic trainers and physical therapists who are committed to providing comprehensive care to all of our sports medicine patients,” she says. “We work closely together to come up with the best treatment options available and then work with our patients to create a shared decision for how to move forward.”

Throughout Richardson’s career, she has served as physician for a number of sports teams: hockey at Stony Brook, North Carolina State University Wolfpack football, Arizona State women’s soccer and basketball, the Richmond Strikers rugby club and for the University of Richmond Athletics. Today, she serves as team physician for the Tribe at the College of William & Mary Athletics.

She is also an avid researcher in sports medicine and innovation in surgical techniques, particularly minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures of the hip and knee.

Outside the clinic, Richardson’s active lifestyle mirrors that of her patients. She enjoys hiking and biking with her family, cooking (and with cast iron — ask for her favorite recipes) and perfecting homemade pizza. A former athlete, she stays active with CrossFit, which she loves for its community-driven, team-oriented spirit—something that takes her back to her days of playing basketball, soccer and rugby in school.
