Biography

Advanced care for shoulders and elbows, from new injuries to nagging ailments

Dr. Jennifer Vanderbeck is an orthopaedic surgeon with advanced subspeciality training in shoulder and elbow procedures. She cares for patients who require everything from tendon and ligament repairs to treatment involving bone fractures, reconstruction, or new joints. Some cases allow for an arthroscopic approach, while others dictate a traditional, open surgery.

She cares for patients who have suffered injuries that caused a ligament tear or bone break, while others may have more acute, long-term ailments, including arthritis and or overuse of a joint.

Dr. Vanderbeck knows orthopaedic surgeries can be life changing — in fact, she’s lived the experience, as a skiing injury led her into the field of orthopaedics. It’s rewarding, she says, to see patients overcome their injury or condition and get their lives back after a successful surgery. Through VCU Health, Dr. Vanderbeck and her team can offer surgical solutions for elbow and shoulder problems that aren’t available elsewhere in Central Virginia, and they are continually researching new techniques with an ongoing focus on more advanced, less invasive care.

“We are performing more minimally invasive procedures today, and we have developed new ways to reconstruct the shoulder and elbow with improved outcomes, which includes lowering pain and speeding up recovery,” she says.

Dr. Vanderbeck is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society.

Research Interests: Dr. Vanderbeck’s research focuses on new techniques for shoulder and elbow reconstruction. She is also studying the impact of shoulder surgery on sleep.
