Dr. Jane Limmer is there to guide women through every stage of their reproductive life.
Limmer, an OB-GYN physician at VCU Health, supports mothers through labor and delivery, performs surgeries to treat reproductive health complications and consults with patients during well visits.
“I have the privilege of being there with patients during some of the best moments of their lives, and I also help guide them through what can be extremely difficult and even tragic times,” Limmer says. “To be a trusted partner in a patient’s reproductive journey is incredibly rewarding.”
Limmer earned her medical degree from Harvard University Medical School and was administrative chief resident during her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Duke University Medical Center. She holds an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. She is a member of several professional societies, and is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
Being an OB-GYN involves close collaboration with other specialists, including anesthesiologists, radiologists, nutritionists and many others, she notes. “Every aspect of the patient care I provide is optimized by collaboration with others. I am a strong believer in multi-modal therapy for many conditions like pelvic pain, postpartum mood disorders and perimenopausal sleep disorders. Patients thrive when cared for by a team of professionals,” she says. “I enjoy helping them create their own unique team.”
And at the heart of that team is the patient, Limmer notes. “Health care involves shared decision-making between doctors and patients. It’s crucial for patients to be well-informed and in control of their care.”
Limmer uses medication and lifestyle interventions to help patients transitioning through menopause. She manages birth control for patients who have complicated medical issues and seeks the best treatments possible during pregnancy and the postpartum period following delivery.
She also performs minimally invasive procedures to treat conditions that can cause infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss, such as uterine septums and Asherman Syndrome. Additionally, she often provides referrals for patients who need pelvic floor physical therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.
Before joining VCU Health, Limmer practiced in Colorado, where she received a series of teaching honors that included the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence Teaching Award. She also received the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology National Faculty Award—twice. She’s now an associate professor at the VCU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“I am passionate about training the next generation of OB-GYNs here at VCU,” Limmer says.
When working with each of her patients, Limmer says one of her most important roles is laying out evidence-based treatment alternatives tailored to a person’s specific health needs. “I want my patients to know they always have options,” she says. “My role is to help them find the option that works best for them.”
In her free time, Limmer enjoys spending as much time as she can with her husband, their two boys and a crazy dog. She traveled extensively before having kids and lived in India for three months and in Turkey for a year. Nowadays, Limmer says she and her family love to get outdoors and go biking, hiking and skiing.
