A dedication to advancing sports medicine in patient care and clinical research
J. Brett Goodloe, M.D.’s passion for orthopaedics and sports medicine was born from a genuine love of athletics and helping athletes of all ages and abilities.
“Our goal is to allow people to pursue their functional goals to optimize their fitness and health,” says Goodloe, a sports medicine surgeon specializing in arthroscopic procedures for the shoulder, hip, and knee. “We are continuously building a sports medicine team that is well known in central Virginia for serving and treating athletes, and we are teaching the next generation of sports-medicine surgeons through training our residents and fellows.”
Goodloe is a former athlete himself, playing both basketball and baseball for The College of William & Mary. He then pursued a medical degree at the VCU School of Medicine and, later, trained in an orthopaedic residency at the Medical University of South Carolina followed by a sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at the University of Virginia.
At VCU, his expertise spans a broad array of conditions affecting the shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle, and knee. He specializes in comprehensive arthroscopic procedures of these joints which allows him to manage each patient’s unique conditions or injuries.
“Sports medicine means first understanding the goals and aspirations of the patients you are serving, and making sure they feel heard and cared for at each visit. Our team-based approach requires many different modalities of treatment, and we are going to take extra measures to ensure each person gets the appropriate care that will allow them to remain functional and active,” he explains. “Working with various specialties helps optimize recovery and patient care. At VCU Health, we have excellent providers in all phases of a patient’s surgical care and rehabilitation.”
That teamwork and passion for sports medicine doesn’t end at patient care.
Goodloe is an avid researcher, authoring or co-authoring numerous evidence-based research articles before joining VCU in 2023. He has also authored several book chapters in the field of sports medicine and serves as a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine. His research is advancing the understanding of ligamentous and meniscal injuries of the knee, patellar instability, rehabilitation protocols, hip arthroscopy, femoroacetabular impingement, and injury prevention.
