Getting patients back to the things they love
Hand surgery is full of variety. For Glenn Lee, M.D., that's exactly the point. A hand and upper extremity surgeon at VCU Health, Dr. Lee treats conditions spanning the elbow to the fingertips, from everyday nerve compression and tendon problems to complex fractures, ligament reconstructions and sports-related injuries.
Each case presents Dr. Lee with a unique and compelling challenge. "I chose hand surgery because of the variety of different conditions we see and the surgeries we perform," he says. "I enjoy that I get to see different things to keep me intellectually stimulated and up on current literature."
Dr. Lee's clinical scope is broad. He cares for patients with peripheral compressive neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and arthritis of the hand and wrist. He also has a particular interest in wrist arthroscopy and TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) injuries — performing more TFCC repairs than any other surgeon in the department — as well as fractures and ligament injuries of the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. He frequently treats high school and collegiate athletes.
"I am most excited about getting people back to the things they enjoy," Dr. Lee says. "At VCU Health, we see a broad spectrum of conditions with varying levels of complexity, and I love that our orthopaedics team is able to provide excellent, evidence-based care."
Dr. Lee works closely with VCU Health's team of certified hand therapists, who play an essential role in both primary treatment and post-operative rehabilitation. He approaches each patient with the recognition that expectations vary. "Everyone is different and has different goals for what they want to accomplish," he says. "I try to keep that in mind when I have discussions with people regarding their treatment options."
Patients consistently describe Dr. Lee as attentive, thorough and unhurried — a doctor who takes time to listen and explains things clearly so patients can make informed decisions about their care.
After earning his doctorate from the VCU School of Medicine, Dr. Lee completed his internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at VCU Medical Center. He went on to complete a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Virginia, training jointly across the departments of orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery. He is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery with a hand surgery subspecialty certification and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association for Hand Surgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Dr. Lee has published research on topics including compression neuropathies, wrist arthroscopy and upper extremity trauma, and serves as a peer reviewer for multiple medical journals. In addition to his clinical work at VCU Health, he serves as an assistant clinical professor in VCU's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He enjoys teaching residents and helping to train them to become capable and confident surgeons.
Outside of work, Dr. Lee enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, playing golf and exploring the Richmond food scene.
