Sheldon Barr, MSN, MBA, has been named president of the future Chesterfield hospital, effective July 1. In addition to this new responsibility, Barr will continue serving as president of VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital, where she has already made a meaningful impact.

In the near term, Barr will lead the strategic planning, development and execution of the new Chesterfield hospital. Over the long term, as president of the new hospital, Barr will oversee daily operations and help establish policies and procedures that reflect VCU Health’s mission and values.

“We are grateful to Sheldon for stepping into this important role at such a meaningful moment for VCU Health,” said Marlon Levy, M.D., MBA, CEO of VCU Health. “Her experience, steady leadership and commitment to our mission make her an excellent choice to help guide this work and expand care where our communities need us most.”

This new hospital responds directly to what our patients, families and communities need and deserve, while also creating capacity to strengthen and grow our downtown operations.

As the fastest-growing locality in the commonwealth, Chesterfield is a vital part of our service area, and this investment reflects our deep commitment to improving access, convenience and care for the communities we serve.

“Expanding our footprint into Chesterfield is an exciting step forward in ensuring more patients and families have access to the care they need, closer to home,” Barr said. “I am proud to be part of a team that is deeply committed to compassionate, patient-centered care and strong community partnerships.”

In 2024, Barr also assumed additional supervisory responsibilities for VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital, the ambulatory surgery center at Short Pump and planning for community-based patient care facilities, including VCU Health Chesterfield Pavilion, which remains on schedule to open in spring 2027.

Barr joined VCU Health in 2022 and brings more than 25 years of leadership experience to this role. She previously served as chief executive officer of HCA Florida South Shore Hospital in Sun City Center, Florida. Prior to that, Barr was chief operating officer at HCA’s Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, where she led strategic planning and growth initiatives in key areas including trauma, cardiovascular care and burn services.
