What to expect at your next visit

We continue to enforce strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure your safety.

A lot has changed since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began, but our commitment to safe, responsible care has not. Here are some of the major changes we’ve put in place to best serve you and your loved ones.

We will greet you at the door.

When you enter one of our buildings, you will be greeted by a VCU Health team member to make sure you have a mask to wear for your appointment. If you do not have a mask, we will provide one. We will also screen you for COVID-19 symptoms and will direct you to a separate waiting and treatment area if you show signs of a respiratory infection.




Rigorous disinfection and cleaning measures are taking place.

We have increased our disinfecting measures to protect you from COVID-19. You may see extra hand-washing stations available and more VCU Health housekeepers cleaning around you. That’s because we’ve added team members to wipe down high-touch surfaces like door knobs, elevator buttons and handrails more frequently. We also clean wheelchairs before and after each patient is transported. Take a look at this video to see how we are ensuring our facilities are safe and clean:


You may spend less time in our waiting rooms and see fewer people.

When you enter our waiting rooms, you will notice more space between chairs and markings on the floor to adhere to the recommended 6-foot distance between individuals. We have also installed Plexiglas shields at our check-in locations where you talk to our patient representatives.

If you’re headed to an appointment at the Children’s Pavilion downtown, you will find additional precautions. Please visit Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU for those changes. 

Take advantage of our telehealth services.

If you have an outpatient appointment coming up, need a medication refill or have recently left the hospital and require a follow-up, your next appointment may be conducted on your computer, tablet or smartphone. We provide telehealth services, which allow you to have virtual visits with a trusted VCU Health provider from the comfort of your home. Learn more or request a virtual visit here.

We offer virtual urgent care — no appointment necessary.

If you need immediate medical care or are concerned you have COVID-19 symptoms, we can screen you from our virtual urgent clinic.

We offer on-demand virtual urgent clinic visits to adults in Virginia from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. No appointment is required. We also provide pediatric virtual urgent care from 4 p.m. to midnight. Our providers can assess you for mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms, share next steps and refer you to in-person care if needed.

Providers are also available for other health issues like asthma, abdominal or lower back pain, nausea or vomiting, allergies and rashes. Start an urgent clinic virtual visit by visiting our VCU Health Anywhere site.

Please note, if you or a loved one is having an emergency, such as a stroke, heart attack or trauma, call 9-1-1 immediately. Rest assured, our emergency room is a safe place. What isn’t safe is delaying treatment.

If you have a planned surgery, you will be screened for COVID-19.

We are screening all adult and select pediatric patients for COVID-19 prior to scheduled surgeries, as well as before some procedures and tests.
Select patients will be tested for COVID-19 prior to their scheduled surgery. For your convenience, we have set up drive-thru and walk-in testing sites across the region. Your VCU Health provider will contact you to set up a time, location and transportation option that best meets your needs.
Pre-procedure testing is available with an order from your doctor at the following locations. Please continue to check this page, as information on our testing sites does change.

Adult testing sites:

  • VCU Medical Center visitor parking deck in downtown Richmond for adult and pediatric testing (drive-thru)
    Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
    Closed Thursday and Sunday
  • CMH Occupational Health & Wellness for adult testing
    Monday – Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Even with restricted visitation, your loved ones can still be with you.

We understand the important role that family and friends play in healing and recovery. Check our visitor policy to see who may accompany you for your next appointment or scheduled surgery. If our policy excludes a visitor at the moment, don’t worry. We have a virtual visitation program so you stay connected with loved ones while you are in the hospital, and we will hand-deliver notes sent through our virtual greeting card program.
