Advanced hip and knee replacement care grounded in experience and collaboration
Chronic hip and knee pain can affect nearly every part of daily living, from mobility and independence to overall quality of life. That’s why Rupal M. Patel, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at VCU Health, focuses on delivering comprehensive, individualized care for patients with degenerative joint conditions, helping them move more comfortably and confidently.
Dr. Patel specializes in the treatment of hip and knee arthritis, offering both non-surgical and surgical options tailored to each patient’s needs. His care spans conservative approaches — including medications, targeted exercises, bracing, and cortisone or gel injections — as well as advanced surgical solutions. “I specialize in hip and knee replacement surgeries,” he says, “including minimally invasive anterior hip replacement, robotic-assisted joint replacement and complex revision procedures when needed.”
A member of the VCU Health orthopaedic team for over a decade, Dr. Patel has built a broad clinical practice serving patients across the Richmond region. He sees patients in multiple outpatient locations and performs surgeries at several hospitals throughout the area.
“The most satisfying part of my practice is being able to help patients across greater Richmond, from Short Pump and downtown to Chester and Colonial Heights,” Dr. Patel notes. “It allows me to deliver continuity of care while meeting patients where they are.” Further, his fluency in English, Hindi and Gujarati is a significant asset for patient communication in such a diverse region.
Collaboration is central to Dr. Patel’s approach. He works closely with colleagues across VCU Health to ensure coordinated, multidisciplinary care — particularly for patients with complex medical or surgical needs. “One of the biggest advantages of working at VCU Health is the ability to collaborate with colleagues who bring expertise from across medicine,” he says. He also emphasizes the importance of integrated postoperative support, including physical therapy, inpatient rehabilitation and access to durable medical equipment to support recovery after surgery.
Along with his clinical work, Dr. Patel is an associate professor in the VCU Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, where he actively trains orthopaedic residents and adult reconstruction fellows. He also serves as an associate editor for the Orthopedic Research Online Journal and Novel Techniques in Arthritis & Bone Research.
Dr. Patel earned his medical degree from Baroda Medical College in India before moving to the United States, where he completed advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine and adult reconstructive surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and remains actively engaged in advancing surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures.
Outside of work, Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with his family, camping in Shenandoah National Park and pursuing his interest in cars, including driving and customizing them.
