Keeping patients active at every stage of life
Orthopaedic surgeon Vamsi Singaraju, M.D., approaches musculoskeletal care with a holistic perspective. Rather than focusing on a single injury or procedure, he helps patients navigate orthopaedic challenges as they evolve over time, with the goal of preserving mobility, independence and an active lifestyle at every stage of life.
Dr. Singaraju is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at VCU Health with dual fellowship training in sports medicine and joint replacement. That combination allows him to care for what he calls the “aging athlete”: patients whose needs may evolve over time but whose desire to remain active never fades. He treats a wide spectrum of orthopaedic conditions, from ACL, meniscus and rotator cuff injuries in younger individuals to hip, knee and shoulder arthritis requiring joint replacement in older patients.
“My goal is to help patients continue doing the activities they enjoy, whether through non-surgical management such as medications, physical therapy and injections, or through surgical intervention when needed,” Dr. Singaraju says.
Patients with complex cartilage injuries or overlapping sports and degenerative conditions can benefit significantly from Dr. Singaraju’s breadth of expertise. He can discuss both surgical and non-surgical options in detail, helping patients make informed decisions based on their activity level, expectations and stage of injury or disease.
Since joining VCU Health in 2019, Dr. Singaraju has been part of a large academic orthopaedic team that takes a multidisciplinary approach to complex musculoskeletal care. Collaboration is central to his philosophy as both a caregiver and a colleague. “I strongly encourage all members involved in the mutual care of patients to contact me directly with any questions or concerns so we can provide timely, coordinated and high-quality care,” he says.
Raised in a multigenerational family of physicians, Dr. Singaraju witnessed firsthand the evolution of medicine toward a more patient-centered model. With an overwhelming amount of medical information instantly available, he believes education, expert guidance and shared decision making are paramount to patient success.
In the operating room, Singaraju routinely incorporates advanced technology, including anterior hip replacement, robotic-assisted knee replacement and GPS-guided shoulder replacement. “Combining a strong clinical foundation with the latest technological advances allows me to provide high-quality, personalized patient care,” he says. He remains committed to continuous learning through national conferences, academic collaboration and ongoing skills development.
Singaraju measures success by his patients’ outcomes — and their trust. “The most meaningful reward is seeing a patient return to an active lifestyle,” he says. He finds fulfillment in caring for multiple generations within the same family, an experience he describes as both professionally and personally meaningful.
Dr. Singaraju earned his undergraduate degrees in medicine and surgery at Armed Forces Medical College in India, where exposure to military wounds inspired his interest in orthopaedics. After moving to the United States in 2005, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and fellowships in sports medicine and adult reconstruction.
For four years before joining VCU Health, Dr. Singaraju served patients at Colonial Orthopaedics in Colonial Heights. His leadership experience includes stints as joint and spine nit medical director at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg and as chief of surgery at Tri Cities Hospital in Hopewell. At the latter, he introduced robotic knee replacement to the Tri-Cities area. Several publications have featured his research, including the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and Arthroscopy.
Outside of work, Singaraju enjoys traveling with his family, spending time in nature and reading. He is also an avid student of world history and has visited orthopedic centers around the globe, blending his passion for learning with a lifelong curiosity about diverse cultures and approaches to medicine.
