Biography

Dedicated to Reproductive Justice and Compassionate Care

Sam Twyman is a certified nurse midwife (CNM) with a passion for helping people achieve their desired family size – whether that means growing their family or making an informed decision not to have children.

With a passion for reproductive justice, Sam specializes in infertility care and guiding patients toward their family goals. Her approach centers on advocacy, autonomy and inclusivity — with a special focus on the LGBTQ+ and polyamorous communities.

At VCU Health, Sam works closely with physicians to provide comprehensive, patient-centered fertility care. She gets asked a lot if she also delivers babies, and while she has delivered babies both in hospital and birth center settings, for now her passion is fertility and early pregnancy care. As a Certified Nurse-Midwife, she has provided a wide range of services throughout her career, including primary and gynecologic care; family planning; deliveries; prenatal and postpartum care; and abortion services. Her approach is shaped by her time at Planned Parenthood, where she learned the importance of accessible, compassionate care.

Beyond the clinic, Sam devotes herself to another form of care: dog rescue. A lifelong advocate for animal welfare, she has fostered dozens of dogs and helped transport many rescue animals to their forever homes. Alongside her partner, she has made her own family decision to remain child-free and share their home with five rescue dogs.

Advice to patients: “Advocate for yourself, and know that in the exam room you hold the power. You can always say ‘stop,’ you can always say ‘I’m uncomfortable with that,’ and if a provider does not respect that, you can (and should) get up and walk out. Your healthcare team should always respect your autonomy. Your body is yours.”
