Biography

Minimally invasive surgical techniques are redefining how physicians treat complex liver and pancreatic diseases. Sahaj Rathi, M.D., is leading that transformation at VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center.

As a hepatologist and therapeutic endoscopist, Rathi specializes in advanced endoscopy, which uses flexible, camera-based tools to diagnose and treat conditions of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts and digestive tract. Through procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), he addresses issues like bile duct blockages, pancreatic cysts and complications of liver disease without the need for open surgery.

“My goal is to offer therapies that reduce the need for surgery, shorten recovery times and ultimately improve quality of life,” Rathi said. “Minimally invasive care is one way we are strengthening the advanced endoscopy program at VCU Health for patients with complex GI conditions. Plus, VCU Health has a unique combination of cutting-edge innovation, strong academic tradition and a deep commitment to serving the community. I am inspired by the collaborative spirit here and the opportunity to contribute to both patient care and the training of future physicians.”

Before joining VCU Health in 2024, Rathi was as assistant professor of hepatology at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, India, where he performed thousands of advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures and mentored fellows in hepatology and endoscopy. He completed advanced fellowships in transplant hepatology from Canada and in advanced endoscopy from India.

“Diseases of the liver and pancreas can be very complex, and every patient’s anatomy and clinical needs are different. That means no two procedures are exactly alike, and you have to constantly adapt and innovate,” he said. “It also means I have to reach beyond my own expertise and work closely with other specialists, like surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists. Complex digestive and liver diseases require a team approach, the best outcomes happen when specialists combine their expertise to tailor care for each patient.”

Rathi has been recognized with multiple national and international awards for innovations in endoscopy. He is invited as a speaker for specialty conferences worldwide and has published over 80 papers in leading journals including The American Journal of Gastroenterology, The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine.
