Combining precision, innovation and patient-centered rhinology and skull base care
Michael F. Armstrong, M.D., is an ear, nose, throat and neck (ENT) surgeon at VCU Health specializing in advanced rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery. He provides highly specialized care for patients with challenging nasal, sinus and skull base conditions — using minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.
Armstrong’s interest in rhinology is driven by both technical precision and tangible impact on quality of life.
“I find joy in helping patients breathe better through their nose,” says Armstrong, who also serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the School of Medicine. His clinical expertise includes the treatment of septal deviation, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, spinal fluid leaks and tumors involving the nose, sinuses and skull base.
A central focus of his patient practice is collaborative, interdisciplinary care. “I work with neurosurgery to access skull base pathology through the nose using minimally invasive incisions,” he says. “I also collaborate with oncology for management of sinonasal malignancies. This approach gives patients comprehensive, coordinated care while minimizing surgical morbidity and recovery time.”
After earning his medical degree from the VCU School of Medicine — where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society — Armstrong completed his otolaryngology residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. During residency, he received the Skull Award for the highest in-service exam score. He then completed advanced fellowship training in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at the University of North Carolina.
For Armstrong, returning to VCU Health as faculty several years after medical school was a deliberate and meaningful decision. “VCU provides high quality and equitable care to a wide variety of patients, and I hope that my practice reflects that ethic,” he says.
Armstrong also maintains an active and wide-ranging research portfolio focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of complex disorders of the upper airway and head and neck. His work has explored chronic rhinosinusitis and inflammatory disease, including biologic therapies and the impact of environmental and occupational exposures, as well as innovative approaches to post-viral olfactory dysfunction.
Research also informs Armstrong’s balanced, evidence-based approach to care: selecting the right treatment for the right patient, based on both clinical data and individual needs. He finds careful listening and shared goal-setting key to achieving the best outcomes: “I seek to understand every patient’s needs during the initial clinic visit and collaborate with the patient to design an effective treatment plan,” he says.
Beyond his clinical work, Armstrong has participated in global medical outreach, including surgical and educational efforts in Vietnam, Haiti and Kenya with organizations like Resource Exchange International and Samaritan’s Purse. He enjoys playing classical and jazz piano, running, playing tennis and spending time with his wife and son.
