Biography

Advanced sports medicine and orthopaedic care, closer to home

For patients in Virginia's Northern Neck and surrounding rural communities, getting specialized orthopaedic care has often meant a long drive. Lee G. Gammon, M.D., brings that expertise closer to home.

A board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and fellowship-trained sports medicine specialist at VCU Health, Dr. Gammon provides comprehensive musculoskeletal care — from adolescent sports injuries to adult arthritis and complex fractures — right in Tappahannock. "Whether it's helping an athlete return to competition, restoring mobility after an injury, or relieving pain from arthritis, I'm committed to helping patients get back to the activities they enjoy most,” he says.

Dr. Gammon treats conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle, including rotator cuff tears, ACL and meniscus injuries, shoulder and knee instability, fractures, tendon injuries and arthritis. His fellowship training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill equipped him with advanced arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques designed to reduce surgical trauma and speed recovery. He also has a special interest in cartilage restoration and emerging biologic treatments that may help preserve joint health and improve healing.

Before recommending surgery, Dr. Gammon believes in giving other treatment options their due. "Whenever possible, I start with conservative treatment," he says. "When surgery is necessary, I work closely with each patient to develop an individualized plan focused on achieving the best possible outcome."

A fascination with the way the human body is built and heals drew Dr. Gammon to his field: “Orthopaedic surgery uniquely combines the principles of physics, engineering and anatomy with the remarkable biology of healing and recovery.” That scientific curiosity is matched by a commitment to collaborative care. Dr. Gammon works closely with primary care physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, radiologists and pain management specialists to coordinate treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.

Dr. Gammon earned his medical degree with distinction from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and holds a master's degree in nutritional sciences, also from the University of Kentucky. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at VCU Medical Center and a sports medicine fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill. Along with board certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he holds memberships in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Virginia Orthopaedic Society.

Before joining VCU Health, Dr. Gammon provided team physician coverage for athletic programs at UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and numerous universities and high schools in and near Richmond. In addition to his current clinical work, he serves as an assistant clinical professor in the VCU Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

His advice to patients is straightforward: "Stay active, eat well and invest in your long-term health. Small, consistent healthy habits often make the biggest difference over time."

Outside of work, Dr. Gammon enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, as well as their three dogs and cat. He is an avid golfer and tennis player who also enjoys cooking, traveling and spending time outdoors.

Dr. Gammon did not seem concerned with my pain level. Promised me two weeks of pain medications, to last me until I see the surgeon, but provided only one week. What I'm supposed to do with remaining time is unclear. Planning to return to large doses of acetaminophen, which provides poor pain relief for my hip.

Dr. Gammon is the best. He's professional, intelligent, well prepared, kind, and funny. He treats the whole human. He answers all the questions my husband and I have and doesn't make us feel silly for asking. There were concerns earlier in the year that my husband would be stationed elsewhere and we'd have to move before I could have my next surgery. Dr. Gammon was prepared to help us find an excellent surgeon in our new location and to provide all his notes and information to the new doctor. We found out we'll be here for a while yet. I'm so relieved, because I really didn't want someone new to perform the operation. I feel comfortable with Dr. Gammon, and I have full confidence in his abilities. He's one in a million, and I feel fortunate to have him as my surgeon.
