Keeping patients on their feet through expert orthopaedic care
Many patients can rest a knee or a shoulder if needed following an injury. The foot is often a different story, especially if a patient intends to work, care for family or simply cross a room.
That is the central problem Khalid Hasan, M.D., works to address. “The foot and ankle are remarkably intricate, and even a small injury or deformity can make activities of daily living difficult,” he says.
An orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon with VCU Health, Dr. Hasan treats ankle sprains and fractures, Achilles tendon injuries, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, bunions, flat feet, arthritis and tendon problems. He also performs joint fusions, ankle replacements, addresses deformities and the harder cases that follow an earlier injury or a previous operation. He also cares for general and trauma orthopaedic patients at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital (CMH).
Dr. Hasan enjoys the inherent challenges of orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery. “It combines complex problem-solving with a direct impact on how people move through their everyday lives,” he says.
Treatment usually begins with activity changes, supportive shoes, bracing, custom inserts, physical therapy or injections. Dr. Hasan only proceeds to operate when those options fall short or the injury demands it. He was among the first at VCU Health to perform minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, an approach that employs smaller incisions.
“My approach to patient care is centered on listening first,” Dr. Hasan says. Every patient arrives with a different goal, whether that is walking with less pain, getting back to work or keeping up with family. That goal drives his recommendations.
Foot and ankle problems are rarely isolated, particularly for patients with diabetes, circulation trouble or open wounds. Dr. Hasan works with primary care clinicians, physical therapists, podiatrists, radiologists, pain specialists, wound-care teams and rehabilitation staff before and after surgery. “I believe the best care comes from teamwork,” he says.
Patients describe Dr. Hasan as careful and unhurried, happy to re-explain a concept until it has clearly landed. He believes patients’ role in their own care is critical and encourages them to get help before an issue becomes urgent: “Seeking care early can often prevent a problem from becoming more difficult to treat.”
Dr. Hasan earned his medical degree at Foundation University Medical College in Pakistan and his Master of Public Health at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar (affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical College). Afterwards, he trained in the United States through three fellowships: musculoskeletal oncology at the University of Miami, foot and ankle surgery at Northwestern University, and foot and ankle and lower extremity surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.
By training across diverse health systems, Dr. Hasan says he learned how much culture, access to care and teamwork shape what a patient experiences. “Excellent surgical care is not only about technical skill,” he says. “It also requires careful listening, humility, sound judgment and a commitment to being there for patients throughout recovery.”
Dr. Hasan is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at VCU and medical director of rehabilitation services at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill. He serves on the postgraduate education committee of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and previously chaired its resident surgical skills course. He also sits on the advisory board of FootEducation.com, a free patient and provider resource. A co-author on over two dozen publications and book chapters, he centers his research on which treatments best restore function and return people to work.
Outside of work, Dr. Hasan spends time with family and friends, stays active, travels and reads.
