Expert care for shoulder, scapular and clavicle disorders
For injuries and conditions affecting the bones, muscles and ligaments of the upper chest, shoulders and collarbone areas, Dr. Kevin Wall is a critical member of many patients’ care team.
Dr. Wall is a fellowship-trained shoulder and scapular specialist dedicated to treating both routine and highly complex shoulder, clavicle, scapula and thoracic-girdle disorders. Beyond his specialty, he also treats a range of common orthopaedic conditions such as adult reconstruction and joint replacement, hip and knee replacement and other joint and bone disorders.
Dr. Wall focused his fellowship training and experience on the shoulder, treating conditions such as serratus or trapezius paralysis, scapulothoracic bursitis, scapular dyskinesis and chronic scapular-thoracic pain. These conditions are often under-recognized yet can produce profound dysfunction and discomfort. He uses a comprehensive evaluation (including imaging, electromyography and dynamic assessment), educates patients on underlying causes and develops tailored treatment that, depending on the individual, may or may not require surgery.
“But I believe strongly in exhausting all non-operative treatment options, leaning instead on physical therapy, activity modification, injections and rehabilitation,” he said. When surgery is indicated, he offers the full spectrum of open and arthroscopic approaches for shoulder conditions including rotator cuff tears, labral pathology, arthritis, instability and fractures. He is also an expert in advanced reconstructive and revision techniques such as tendon transfers, joint replacements and salvage procedures.
Dr. Wall earned his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine before completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed additional training in a shoulder fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is a member of both the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.
Dr. Wall has also contributed extensively to the orthopaedic literature with numerous studies, reviews, abstracts and presentations at both local and national meetings. At the VCU School of Medicine, he serves as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
