Please drink water: A urology nurse practitioner’s down-to-earth approach to patient care
For family nurse practitioner Kait Rafuse, urology is about more than managing symptoms — it’s about restoring quality of life and empowering patients to understand and manage their conditions with confidence.
Her approach is shaped by years of experience in intensive care, trauma surgery, outpatient infectious disease and clinical research. “I am excited to be a part of the VCU Health urology team to help improve my patients’ quality of life with their urologic conditions,” she says.
Rafuse specializes in the management of recurrent urinary tract infections and urologic care for patients with neurological conditions, including spinal cord injuries, spina bifida and multiple sclerosis. She works across the spectrum of care assisting with diagnosis, treatment, and pre- and post-operative planning to provide comprehensive, compassionate support. “We have a great team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and call on our other resources within VCU Health multispecialty clinics when needed,” she says.
Rafuse earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing at VCU, where she was in the Honors College. She decided to become a nurse practitioner after working in the ICU and seeing the impact of preventable hospitalizations. She is particularly passionate about using her infectious disease knowledge to reduce hospitalizations and improve outcomes for complex urology patients.
“There’s a great reward in helping patients feel better and live more fully, especially when you can help prevent further complications down the line,” she says.
Her approach to care centers on listening: “Patients live in their bodies, and they know when something is off,” she says. “I believe it is our job as providers to hear them, respect their experiences and work together on a plan that helps.”
Rafuse is also a firm believer in patient education and advocacy, equipping people with the tools and knowledge to better manage their urologic conditions.
Outside of the urology clinic, she enjoys exploring Richmond’s restaurant scene, grabbing soft-serve ice cream from Study Hall in Forest Hill, spotting murals around the city and traveling with her wife.
Advice to patients: “Please, please, please drink water! Adequate water consumption is one of the most underutilized UTI and kidney stone prevention tools that we have. It works!”
