Biography

From the Army to civilian care at VCU Health

It’s unlikely you’ll need treatment at VCU Health due to being wounded in military combat — but Jacob Cook is nonetheless trained to provide it.

He joined VCU Health after serving 17 years in the U.S. Army, first as a combat medic, later as a sergeant in a medical platoon, and eventually as a physician assistant. Here, he brings Central Virginia patients his wide range of experiences and training in military medicine to his current focus: treating muscle, bone, and joint injuries.

Like the Army, he appreciates the way physicians, PAs, and nurses work together as a team. Cook is a valued teammate with VCU Health Orthopaedics, where he specializes in treating musculoskeletal injuries.

“I have a solid understanding of the body’s anatomy and the interaction of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems,” says Cook. “When you understand how each part of the body works together, it helps to identify where the symptoms are originating and come up with a plan to treat it.”

He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Beyond the clinic, he is often outdoors pursing his personal passion of wildlife photography.

Advice to Patients

“Jot down questions and ideas for your appointment ahead of time. It helps to think about your symptoms and identify times you notice them, or the way certain activities may impact you. This helps us have a thorough discussion and give you answers to your questions at the time of your visit.”
