Advanced orthopaedic care for upper extremity and sports-related conditions
For more than two decades, Dr. Manjit Dhillon has helped patients regain function, relieve pain and return to the activities that matter most to them.
Dr. Dhillon is an orthopaedic surgeon at VCU Health specializing in upper extremity and hand surgery, sports medicine and general orthopaedics. He commonly treats a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, from carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger to hand and wrist arthritis, elbow injuries and shoulder disorders.
Arthroscopic shoulder procedures, rotator cuff repair and joint replacement for advanced arthritis of the shoulder and elbow are just a few of Dr. Dhillon’s areas of surgical expertise. He also uses bedside ultrasound to guide injections and assist with diagnosis, allowing for more precise, patient-specific care.
With more than 25 years in practice in the Richmond area, Dr. Dhillon brings both technical prowess and a steady, reassuring presence to the exam room. His approach is grounded in understanding each patient’s goals and tailoring treatment accordingly. “Every patient is different, and returning function and reducing pain for each one is a unique challenge,” he says. “Learning what matters most to them takes time, patience and listening.”
Collaboration is central to Dr. Dhillon’s practice, particularly when caring for patients with complex or overlapping conditions. He works closely with primary care physicians, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, physical and hand therapists, neurologists and rheumatologists to ensure coordinated care. Within orthopaedics, he frequently partners with colleagues on challenging cases — and when appropriate, operates alongside them to achieve the best possible outcomes.
More than six years into his tenure, Dr. Dhillon continues to be motivated by VCU Health’s mission and the opportunity to care for a diverse patient population. “Being able to provide patient-centered, high-quality care — including for underserved and marginalized communities — is important to me,” he says. He is equally passionate about teaching and lifelong learning, viewing collaboration with colleagues as essential to delivering cutting-edge care.
Dr. Dhillon encourages patients to take an active role in their care, emphasizing preparation, communication and trust. “Health care can be overwhelming,” he notes. “Coming in with questions, understanding your condition and finding a provider you connect with can make a real difference in both outcomes and experience.”
After completing his medical degree and advanced training in orthopaedic surgery in India, Dr. Dhillon underwent further residency training in the United States. He then completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at New York University and was in private practice before joining VCU Health. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds certificates of added qualification in both hand surgery and sports medicine.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Dhillon enjoys reading, traveling, listening to music and spending time with his family and dogs.
