Specialized orthopaedic oncology care for complex tumors and infections
Orthopaedic conditions involving tumors or deep infections are highly complex, often requiring coordination across multiple specialties. At VCU Health, Dr. Anna Greenwood provides expert care for patients with musculoskeletal tumors and infections, using clear communication and collaboration to guide diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Greenwood is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in benign and malignant tumors of the bones and soft tissues affecting the arms, legs and pelvis. She also treats patients with complex musculoskeletal infections such as osteomyelitis. As one of only two orthopaedic oncologists in central Virginia, she is critical to patients who might otherwise need to travel long distances for treatment. “I am proud to provide this specialized care close to those who need it,” she says.
The breadth of patients and conditions Dr. Greenwood treats motivates her. “I get to take care of adults and kids, and I like the multidisciplinary aspect of taking care of both tumors and infections,” she says. That collaborative approach is central to her practice, as she works closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists to diagnose and treat tumors.
Dr. Greenwood regularly participates in multidisciplinary tumor boards, where complex cases are reviewed collaboratively to ensure that every patient’s care plan reflects the best available expertise. For patients with serious infections, she partners closely with infectious disease specialists and the orthopaedic wound care team to coordinate both surgical and medical management.
Patients describe Dr. Greenwood as a committed caregiver who communicates clearly and engages in shared decision making. Many note her ability to explain complex diagnoses, answer questions patiently and involve patients and families in care planning. One patient deemed her “the best surgeon I’ve ever met,” emphasizing her reassuring nature and overall care for patients and staff.
After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, Greenwood earned her medical degree from the VCU School of Medicine, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at VCU Health before pursuing fellowship training in orthopaedic oncology at Emory University and Children’s Hospital of Atlanta.
In addition to her surgical work, Dr. Greenwood serves as an assistant professor in the VCU Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She plays a key role in training future orthopaedic surgeons, serving as associate program director, director of the basic science curriculum for first- and second-year residents and medical student coordinator for third- and fourth-year orthopaedic surgery rotations.
Dr. Greenwood’s scholarly work includes publications and educational materials focused on musculoskeletal tumors, infections and surgical decision making. She previously served as editor-in-chief at healthcare education and technology company, StatPearls, and has authored peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters addressing both oncologic and reconstructive challenges.
