Conditions and diseases in blood vessels can sometimes lead to serious symptoms that affect a person’s brain and central nervous system. Arteries and veins in the brain and spine are also prone to conditions that can lead to severe complications if not treated promptly.

Dr. Anil Roy provides comprehensive neurosurgical care for both cerebrovascular and skull-base disorders, treating adults and children with conditions such as stroke, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, intracranial and spinal vascular lesions, and narrowing or blockages of the arteries and veins supplying the brain. His practice spans the full spectrum of complex cranial neurosurgery, integrating open and endovascular techniques within the cerebrovascular program, and advanced open and endoscopic skull-base approaches.

At VCU Health, he leads efforts to develop a multidisciplinary skull base program. Patients benefit from seamless coordination among neurosurgery, neurointerventional radiology, ENT skull-base specialists, and radiation oncology, ensuring that even the most challenging conditions are evaluated from every angle.  

Dr. Roy’s medical education spans more than 13 years. After earning his medical degree at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, he completed his neurosurgery residency at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. While there, he dedicated a year in learning how to diagnose cerebrovascular diseases (those of blood vessels in the brain) using endovascular (catheter-based) techniques. He later completed fellowship training in open cerebrovascular and skull-base neurosurgery at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and a second fellowship in endovascular neurosurgery at Baptist Health Lyerly Neurosurgery in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Roy is board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, with clinical expertise spanning management of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid and intracranial stenosis, skull-base tumors and complex vascular lesions. He has additional certification in Endovascular Neurosurgery with a Recognition of Focused Practice by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is committed to personalized, evidence-based care, helping patients understand their diagnosis and partnering with them to choose the treatment plan that best aligns with their goals, safety and long-term health.

He has also authored and contributed to a number of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international neurosurgical meetings. His research includes studies on aneurysm treatment strategies, minimally invasive approaches for intracerebral hemorrhage, imaging and thermal-injury analysis and management of rare vascular lesions. Throughout his training, he has been recognized for academic excellence and clinical leadership, including multiple scholarships at Northwestern.
