Comprehensive care for all forms of kidney disease

When you have a kidney condition, you have a lot on your mind: You watch your blood pressure and blood chemistry. You make diet and lifestyle changes. You navigate appointments and treatment plans. No matter where you are on your journey, you can count on our caring team to support you through every step of your care.

Services we offer

Our services span all types of kidney disease, even the rare and challenging conditions. We treat everything from kidney stones to end-stage kidney failure, including highly specialized services like glomerular kidney disease  and complex organ transplant care .

Whatever your condition, we want to keep you and your kidneys in top form. That’s why our care team will work closely with you to create a treatment plan that includes a combination of treatment options tailored to your unique needs.

Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend one or more of these tests to gain better understanding of your condition. Armed with the results of your blood tests, urine tests or tissue biopsy, our specialists can diagnose your condition and develop a treatment plan to get you back to the life you love.

You may need dialysis if your kidneys aren’t functioning properly. This treatment helps you filter the toxins, wastes and excess fluids your kidneys aren’t. Dialysis services include education, guidance and ongoing support for patients undergoing dialysis, including helping with surgical access when needed, including:

  • Fistula (artery joined to a vein beneath skin)
  • Graft (artery joined to a nearby vein with a small tube beneath skin)
  • Catheter (thin tube inserted into a large vein — usually in the neck)

Glomerular Kidney Disease can lead to kidney failure without the right kind of diagnosis and care. That’s why our glomerular kidney disease experts research these rare diseases—and stay committed to delivering the highest level of care.

The VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center is a recognized organ transplant authority, offering everything from pre-transplant consultation, planning and guidance to transplant surgery and after care. Our skilled specialists are part of a transplant team that works across medical specialties to ensure we’ve covered every aspect of your care, from developing and carrying out advanced treatment plans to providing dedicated immediate and long-term services after complex transplant procedures.

Care you can trust

When you’re living with kidney disease, you need a team you can trust. And since it’s likely there are many doctors involved, it’s important they work together to coordinate your care. Here, teaming up to care for people living with more than one condition is a normal part of what we do.

And some of America’s top doctors are on our teams. In fact, we’re listed among U.S. News & World Report’s high-performing hospitals for kidney care. Our success story began with Virginia’s first kidney transplant in 1957. And we’re still kidney care leaders today.

If you have concerns about kidney conditions, reach out to your doctor or care team. They can put you in touch with the best services and specialists for your needs.
